2016-2017 Kickoff ♦ Message from the President
Greetings and welcome to the first newsletter of FY17! As this year’s President, it is my pleasure, duty, and honor to introduce this latest trove of information and provide a brief overview of some of the exciting things we have planned for the coming year.
Now that summer is behind us, I imagine the pace of life is picking up tempo, and your time is a valuable commodity. But if you’ve made it this far I encourage you to keep reading. Our Chapter’s Marketing and Communications team has once again assembled an excellent collection of articles and updates I’m certain you’ll find interesting and insightful. In this issue, you’ll meet this year’s new SoCal Board who works closely with a dedicated team of volunteers to put together great educational and networking programs for our members. Our volunteers are the foundation of what we do so this year we are kicking off a new feature to get “up close and personal” with some of our dynamic and dedicated volunteers!
You’ll also read about the recipients of our Health IT Scholarships as well as Student Mentorship through our Academic Alliance Program. This issue also gives insights into our tremendous Advocacy efforts, profiles speakers of upcoming events, and introduces you to our brand-new Patient Experience Committee. And if you don’t find the article you are most interested in reading, I encourage you to become a contributor and add your own voice to the many dedicated volunteers who helped create this latest edition. So read on, speak up, and take part! This is your Chapter and we want not only to serve you, but to encourage and empower you to become an active part of the best Chapter in the nation.
And this brings me to my last point - Continuity. Over the past six years I have had the privilege to volunteer in a variety of roles for our Chapter and witness first-hand, the commitment and dedication it takes to keep performing at such a high level. I could write at length about some of the amazing people who have mentored, encouraged me and supported my personal and professional growth - and I’ve come to understand that the real strength of our Chapter is not in the individual, but in the collective. We must always be training our replacements, passing the baton to the next Board and the next generation who will take us all higher and higher. Back in June when we had our annual planning meeting, the Board discussed the many ways we can continue to do this, and I want to focus briefly on two of them:
Academic Alliance – We know we have a critical role to play in bringing the next generation of health IT professionals into the workforce. From hosting round table meetings and networking events, to providing much-needed scholarship support, to creating effective mentorship programs, we are striving to develop and support today’s students and tomorrow’s leaders. If you are a student: speak up, get involved, and let us know how we can support you even better. And if you are a working HIT professional, join us and offer your own individual skills and talent to nurture the next generation.
Organizational Affiliates - The Organizational Affiliate (OA) programs are designed to help healthcare providers and academic organizations offer their staff and students all of the resources they need to succeed at their jobs and in the industry. Organizations can save money, save time, and become better equipped for success with these benefits:
- free individual memberships
- complimentary education
- access to tools, resources & research
- enhanced networking opportunities
- complimentary HIMSS Annual Conference & Exhibition registrations
We want to bring our message to healthcare organizations and employers, colleges and universities, and we need your help! If you think your place of work or study would welcome a visit from us to discuss all the benefits our OA program has to offer, please call me directly at 818-802-5222.
Don’t forget that our website is a great resource for news and upcoming events. On behalf of the Chapter’s Board of Directors, committee chairs, members and valued sponsors, I would like to thank each of you for your generous support. I look forward to seeing you at a future program event.
President, HIMSS SoCal
