Fall 2019 Newsletter - GovTech Conference Digital Summit

By Barrington (Barry) Hunt, MPA, HIMSS Academic Alliance Representative, Cal State LA

Three hundred state, county and city managers attended the GovTech Conference Digital Summit of government information technology agencies, industry executives and academics in Downtown LA on August 27-28, 2019. It was a real eye-opener. Many of our current and former L.A. County and City DHS/DPH/DMH IT leaders were there presenting, networking and bestowing awards on scores of managers of worthy projects (local, national and international). The event focuses on applying the latest tools in IT to solve problems of government, industry, education, healthcare, city planning, transportation, finance and accounting. Many received productivity awards. Surprise! As the attendee with the most years in public service, I was awarded the best-selling book, Peak Performance, autographed by our keynote speaker and author, Brian Elms, and Conference Director, Rebecca Friedman (see photos below), at a recent such conference. (L to R:  Barry, Brian, Rebecca)

“Electronic government” refers to using IT to exchange information with citizens, businesses, and other agencies. Applications abound in all branches of government to improve internal efficiency, public service delivery and the processes of democratic governance. The primary delivery models are government-to-citizen or government-to-customer (G2C), government-to-business (G2B), government-to-government (G2G) and government-to-employees (G2E). The most important benefits are improved efficiency, convenience, security and accessibility. We learned about cloud computing, big data analytics, eConsult patient care, electronic health records, wireless networks, tracking systems, biometric identification, road traffic management, smart cards, polling station technology, and TV- and radio-based service delivery.

I've been attending these events for years. I recommend you all go next year.  Here is the agenda and program from this year’s event:
