Q1 2019 Newsletter - Recap: Gamifying Pediatrics
By Alan S. Young, MD, MBA, PMP, Chair, CMIO Committee
The HIMSS Southern California CMIO Committee co-hosted the inaugural kick-off for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Innovation Studio Gamifying Pediatrics initiative held at the exciting Two Bit Circus near Downtown Los Angeles. The event brought together physicians and nurses on the front lines of pediatric medicine with engineers, developers, and experts in virtual reality, augmented reality, and gaming. Presenters showcased existing efforts to bring those innovations to healthcare broadly and highlighted unique opportunities to impact pediatric care.
The evening started with networking and access to the variety of arcade and amusement park games offered by the Two Bit Circus emphasizing STEM and augmented/virtual reality simulations. Opening remarks delivered by Omkar Kulkarni, Chief Innovation Officer at CHLA, and Dr. Alan Young, HIMSS SoCal CMIO Committee Chair, set the tone for the evening of inspiring presentations. Cognoa delivered the opening keynote presentation sharing their work using artificial intelligence and augmented reality to improve diagnosis and care of autism patients. Dennis Wall and Catalin Voss from Stanford University and Cognoa revealed some of the ground-breaking advances and FDA approvals Cognoa has been able to achieve in a short time. The next portion of the event consisted of pitches from thought-leaders and startups in the virtual reality and augmented reality industry focusing on pediatric use cases. Representatives from CHLA, Yu+Co, AppliedVR, Adventure Biofeedback, Living Popups and more gave compelling introductions to innovative approaches by these companies to tackle real-life problems in healthcare. At the conclusion of the event, CHLA Innovation Studio announced their Gamifying Pediatrics Hackathon to take place April 12-14.
Special thanks to site host Two Bit Circus, generous sponsors from Cognoa, and the fantastic speakers.
