By Shanti Wilson & John Conklin, Advocacy Chairs, HIMSS Northern and Southern California Chapters
The HIMSS Chapter Advocacy Roundtable held a national event at the HIMSS Innovation Center http://www.himssinnovationcenter.org/ to collaborate and share best practices. Our Northern and Southern California Advocacy Chairs, Shanti Wilson, and John Conklin, represented California. The chairs brought back best practices on advocating to local legislators, building value-based advocacy initiatives and collaborating across the California to support health IT legislation that impacts you, our members. The chairs are incorporating those best practices into the 2017/18 advocacy plan for California and look forward to sharing these with you at our upcoming events in NorCal and SoCal!

A Journey to Self-Service Analytics
By Paul Conocenti, Partner, T2 Tech
We have gone from no data to EHR data to big data all while healthcare is undergoing a transformation from paper-based fee-for-service to value-based care in a digital ecosystem with advanced analytics. Additionally, the rise of ACOs, population health, mergers/acquisitions, and other risk-based initiatives are putting focus on data decision making that ranges from revenue cycle management to precision medicine. Because of these reforms, we now have the digitalization of the patient record and a new wealth of data. This data is growing and encompasses not just health data but other behavioral data from both internal and external sources.
Leading the Change from Descriptive to Predictive Analytics
By Rahul Gupta, PhD
If I were asked to summarize in one word what separates the hype from reality when talking about predictive analytics in healthcare, I would say “adoption”. While the reasons are numerous and still being passionately debated, I think what is more important is that the problem is increasingly being recognized and there is interest from all stakeholders to come up with practical solutions.
AAC Student Perspective
Academic Alliance Community Chair, Thao Tran, asked AAC member and scholarship recipient, Jessica Chacon, for her thoughts on the first Patient Experience Forum.
My first Patient Engagement Experience surpassed all my expectations, as all other HIMSS functions I have previously attended. What really appeals to me at these events is the diversity of professionals, the enlightenment I gain from the presenters, and the topics that are discussed. It provides me with connections of what I am learning in the classroom setting and what is really happening in the “real life” of health information systems.
Chapter Leader Exchange
By Thao Tran, Academic Alliance Community Chair
This year Southern California (SoCal) HIMSS chapter president, Ian Slade, kicks off the new year with a unique approach. In order to have fun and a strong leadership team, Ian had a great idea – let’s send the team to Ohio! A team of nine SoCal HIMSS members was sent to the Chapter Leader Exchange (CLE) in Cleveland, Ohio from July 25th to 26th. The CLE. Each year, every HIMSS chapter in the country sponsors the President-Elect to attend the CLE to network with current leaders, learn best practices, and review existing policies to follow national HIMSS standards. The CLE is not exclusively for incoming presidents. It is open to any individual who has an ardent desire to grow with the chapter and learn about the organization.
